Samsung Facing Lawsuits over Defective Galaxy Note 7 Phones

Last week, the first lawsuit was filed against Samsung over injuries suffered as a result of a defective Galaxy Note 7 phone. This may potentially be the first of many defective product lawsuits the company will face associated with this phone, and it was filed one day after the company recalled approximately 1 million Note 7 phones across the United States.

The lawsuit alleges that the plaintiff suffered severe burn injuries when his Galaxy Note 7 phone exploded in his pants pocket. The accident occurred while the plaintiff was shopping in a Costco store. In addition to the phone-sized second degree burn on his right leg, the man also severely burned his left thumb while trying to get the phone out of his pocket and away from his leg. He is seeking damages for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering.

Samsung recalled the Galaxy Note 7 phone due to a defective battery which is prone to overheating. Currently, the company has received 92 reports of overheating batteries in these phones, resulting in 26 burn injuries. Galaxy Note 7 owners have been instructed to power down the device and exchange it for a properly functioning model immediately.
