Extradition under way for teacher accused of Texas sex crime

According to U.S. Department of Justice statistics, more than 90 percent of child sex crime victims know their attackers. Federal officials estimate that up to 47 percent of child sexual assault perpetrators are family members; the rest are strangers or trusted individuals like coaches or teachers.

“Grooming” can be a significant part of the relationship between a Texas sexual abuser and a child. The violator establishes a kind of trust with a victim by filling a need. At the same time, the child becomes isolated from other relationships. The bond becomes special, then sexual and secretive, sometimes for years.

A 38-year-old Catholic school teacher is in the process of being extradited to Texas to face charges he sexually assaulted a child in Denton. The alleged sexual abuse took place from 2008 to 2011. Reports did not mention the child’s age, gender or circumstances under which the molestation occurred.

The man was a middle school teacher at a West Coast school in October when authorities began looking into the case. Police were tipped off by investigators at a Navy base where the teacher lived temporarily. The defendant had been connected to “crimes with minors.”

Police used search warrants to uncover evidence that led to an aggravated sexual assault charge. After school administrators placed the teacher on leave in October, the man left the area but was located and arrested by law enforcement. The instructor was fired and jailed without bail last month.

Federal officials reported more than 63,000 U.S. child sexual abuse cases in 2010. Authorities believe that represents less than one-third of the assaults that actually take place. Predators often try to make child victims feel guilty or responsible. The victims’ silence buys offenders time to abuse and escape.

We know that child sexual abuse is a crime. However, civil cases may also be brought against offenders and the parties who try to cover up crimes they commit.
