Racing ruled out as cause for Dallas teens' death and injuries

An after-school car accident in South Dallas seriously injured two students and took the life of the twin of one of the injured teenagers. Dallas police initially suspected the fatal car accident was caused by students who were racing, but later dropped the idea after interviewing witnesses.

The one-car crash happened on a Thursday around 4:15 p.m. A Honda with three occupants was traveling along South Lancaster Road when the driver lost control of the vehicle. Police now think the driver hit a wet section of roadway before crashing into a utility pole in the 6100 block.

DNA trail leads authorities to alleged "North Dallas Rapist"

Over the last decade DNA advances have not only proven the innocence of convicted inmates, but also the guilt of those who previously remained free. Now, after an investigation of more than 20 years, Texas police believe they may have the "North Dallas Rapist." The accused was allegedly involved in a string of sexual assaults on young girls and female teenagers during the 1980s and 1990s that went unsolved until recently.

Investigators found a DNA match with a man who was convicted for sexual abuse in another case.

New sex abuse charges at Fort Worth federal care facility

There are many types of sexual offenses. Sometimes abuse can even be consensual. For example, federal law declares that a corrections officer commits an act of sexual abuse, even if an inmate agrees to have sex. Any sexual contact, with or without mutual consent, is illegal between guards and inmates, according to a report by the inspector general of the U.S. Justice Department.

Recently, a staff member at the Federal Medical Center Carswell was accused of having sex with a female inmate, imprisoned in "official detention." The facility is a medical and mental health center at Naval Air Station Fort Worth.

Flashing lights at intersections cause accidents, study says

Can a commonly used but dangerous roadway design cause more car accidents? A new study by University of Texas researchers claims the answer is yes.

Working with the knowledge that as many as 40 percent of all motor vehicle crashes occur at intersections, researchers studied the conditions under which car accidents took place. It found that three times the number of accidents happened at intersections with flashing lights compared to crossroads with stop signs. Numbers of accidents spiked significantly at flashing light intersections near highway entrance and exit ramps.
