6 Dangerous Toys and Summertime Hazards for Children to Avoid

Dangerous Children's Toys - Dallas Defective Product Attorneys Summer is in full swing, providing children with an opportunity to run around and play outside all day long. While this might be a lot more fun than sitting in class, it also creates a more dangerous environment for your children. Every summer, millions of children end up in the emergency room, requiring treatment for a variety of injuries including broken bones, concussions and lacerations.

You can reduce this risk of injury by making sure your children steer clear of dangerous toys and environments that present safety hazards. The following toys, activities and summer hazards should be avoided if at all possible:

  • Toy guns – The consumer advocacy group W.A.T.C.H. has identified toy guns as the most dangerous summer toy for children. Eye injuries are the most common risk from toy guns. Children can suffer painful corneal scratches which can potentially become infected or ulcerated. In severe cases, children may potentially lose an eye.
  • Airborne toys – Toy helicopters and planes have sharp edges which can seriously injure a child, especially if they hit a child in the head or face. It’s important to be extremely careful when launching these items through the air.
  • Hoverboards – These self-balancing scooters can wreak havoc on those who use them, resulting in serious injuries such as broken bones and concussions. Hoverboards also have a tendency to catch fire, resulting in severe burn injuries.
  • Shallow backyard water – Baby pools, Slip N’ Slides, fountains and water guns can provide a refreshing activity on a hot day, but they can pose significant danger to small children. It can be easy to slip and fall on a wet surface, resulting in broken bones or a head injury. In addition, it only takes a few inches of water for very small children to drown, making it crucial that an adult is always present when kids play in baby pools.
  • Flotation devices and water wings – These inflatable devices are commonly used to help young children float in water before they learn how to swim, but when they malfunction it can result in disastrous consequences for the child.
  • Trampolines – It’s common for children to jump on trampolines in groups, creating a dangerous environment. The smallest children can easily get flung around, resulting in collisions with older, larger kids. Common trampoline injuries include broken bones, neck injuries, back injuries and concussions.

If your child is injured by a dangerous or malfunctioning toy this summer, you may be entitled to recover compensation for your child’s damages.
